Our deliverables

ACORD Ethiopia has been operational in the country since 1994 working with the poor and marginalized communities by implementing number of projects in four regions (Two regional states (Orormia and Gambella) and two city administrations ( Addis Ababa Dire Dawa)). These projects were both urban and rural based and involved direct implementation, addressing the consequences of poverty based on independent projects in each geographic area of interventions. This was aligned with ACORD global and country programming approaches which envisaged direct implementation addressing the consequences of poverty based on project approaches. During this period of time ACORD Ethiopia was mainly involved in initiating interventions that promotes strengthening of the capacity of community based organizations to provide services focusing on the areas of micro credit, community based human and animal health services, supporting the development of basic infrastructures and improve awareness on participatory development, HIV/AIDS prevention, gender equality and promotion of peace building and conflict resolution.

Since ACORD began its work in Ethiopia, it has been known for its brand new philosophy of working with iddirs (locally established funeral association) in a broad variety of development areas. ACORD, in fact has received the most of its reputation for becoming exceedingly vocal about the potential capacity of these indigenous associations to play a key role in development apart from carrying out funeral and condolence activities. Along with this approach, ACORD ventured further to help iddirs create centralized coalition and make proper reformation in their inner structure and administration in a manner they could be suitable for developmental role.

To this end, ACORD is simultaneously engaged in taking the lead, sharing experiences and facilitating the task for any organization that is interested in empowering iddirs to the level of development partner-ship. Even though ACORD is well known to be working with iddirs, it is additionally engaged in development activities in several pastoralist and agro- pastoralist regions in partnership with GEDA and other community organizations.

Based on our research, we believe, ACORD has proved successful in its effort to consult and work with Indigenous institutions on all the chosen development alternatives. As a result of the decision to work with such CBOs, we have seen remarkable success in finding easy access into the various groups of society. The success entails the opportunity that we could not only discuss and produce mutual solution in important social issues.

ACORD will and wish to continue working with CBOs and partners in achieving their basic rights and social justice in its engagement that ultimately leads to poverty reduction
